What on earth is Tencel, and why is it an eco-friendly choice?
Tencel™ (generically called lyocell) is a regenerated fiber made from wood pulp that has become a star of responsible clothing. Its production is based on a closed-loop process, in which nearly 100% of the solvents and water used in the process are reused.
Unlike traditional fibers, Tencel is biodegradable, and its production uses only a fraction of the water compared to cotton or bamboo, for example. At Sukkamestarit, it is important to us that every sock we make leaves as small a footprint on nature as possible, and that through our own choices we can help preserve biodiversity.
Tencel vs. Bamboo – what’s the difference?
This is a question we are often asked. Although both are regenerated fibers, the differences are significant, especially from a responsibility perspective:
- Eco-friendliness: Bamboo viscose production often requires strong chemicals in an open-loop process. Tencel’s closed-loop process is much more environmentally friendly.
- Durability: Tencel fiber is naturally stronger than soft bamboo, which means a longer lifespan for the sock.
- Feel: Tencel is a smoother fiber, which makes it especially gentle even on sensitive skin.
Why is a Tencel-merino wool sock the best choice for summer?
It may sound unusual to wear wool in hot weather, but Tencel-merino wool socks are the secret weapon of summer dressing.
- Cooling feel: Tencel is naturally a cool fiber. Together with merino wool, it actively regulates temperature: cooling when it’s hot and warming if the evening turns chilly.
