Kalevala is much more than a national epic. It is a story about the Finnish mindset: perseverance, respect for nature, acceptance of fate, and how a person seeks their place in the world amidst adversity. For centuries, Kalevala has been a part of Finnish identity – a story that has shaped our understanding of ourselves and our roots.
When Elias Lönnrot compiled the Kalevala in the 19th century from folk poetry, he did not just record stories. He gave Finns a voice and a shared narrative at a time when their own culture and language needed strengthening. The Kalevala became the foundation for Finnish culture, art, and self-understanding – and its influence is still visible today in music, design, literature, and now also in the new film Kalevala: Kullervon tarina.
The themes of Kalevala are timeless
The stories of the Kalevala deal with themes that have not disappeared anywhere:
fate, the use of power, revenge, love, and survival. Especially the story of Kullervo is one of the darkest and most powerful tales in the Kalevala – a depiction of an individual struggling with their own history and the surrounding world.
The film Kalevala: Kullervon tarina brings these age-old themes to a new audience and shows how relevant the stories of the Kalevala still are. Even though the world has changed, the inner struggle of a human remains the same.
When stories become forms
The Kalevala does not live only in books or on the silver screen. It also lives in everyday life – in those objects and choices with which we want to tell who we are and where we come from. The Sukkamestareiden Kalevala Collection was born from this idea: how the spirit of the Kalevala can be incorporated into today’s clothing in a subtle, respectful, and timeless way.

The patterns of the collection draw from the symbolism and rhythm of the Kalevala. Repeating shapes, graphic elements, and earthy color schemes refer to stories where nature, humanity, and fate intertwine. They are not direct illustrations, but interpretations – just as the Kalevala has been reinterpreted from generation to generation.
Socks made to last – just like the stories
Kalevala Collection socks are made from Nativa merino wool, which represents responsibility and transparency. The origin of the wool can be traced, and its production takes into account both animal welfare and the environment.
Merino wool – nature’s own super fiber:
- it breathes and regulates temperature
- feels soft against the skin and does not itch
- keeps you warm even when wet
- is naturally antibacterial
The collection includes both thinner, patterned lightweight merino wool socks and merino wool tennis socks, where traditional inspiration meets modern comfort. They are equally suitable for everyday life, work, and leisure.

Finnish craftsmanship from Ylöjärvi
Kalevala Collection socks are made at Sukkamestarit’s own factory in Ylöjärvi. Domestic production is not a trend for us, but a core value. It means quality, responsibility, and expertise that has been honed over decades.
When the socks are made in Finland, we know exactly how they are made – and we can stand behind every pair with pride.
Kalevala goes with you
Kalevala is a story that has passed from mouth to mouth, from book to book, and now in ever new forms as part of everyday life. The Kalevala Collection is a tribute to this tradition: a reminder that Finnishness is a living culture that evolves and finds new forms of expression.
