The downside is the risk of injury, which has been made to minimize, especially for younger athletes, for example. with different gear and tackle ban in games under the age of 14. There is also a big role in the coach's "attitude education", which is important for teenage hockey players to play. The pace does not always fix errors. Injuries caused by skate veneer have been greatly featured with several serious injuries in the 2022-2023 season, both in the NHL, in the Karelia Tournament and in the Swedish Women's Hockey League finals. The end of Merelä's career was just a couple of millimeters away. This time he survived with long rehabilitation and got another chance to return to the hockey rink - though with new equipment.
Although cut protection bracelets and socks do not protect 100% from accidents, it is a big step forward and brings a sense of security to the rink.
